Show HOW ABOUT INFLATION? One of the reasons given for the present hesitancy on the part of business busi-ness to go forward is that business men and financiers are hesitating to make commitments because of the be- j lief that sentiment for monetary inflation in-flation is growing in congress. Nobody wants to make an investment invest-ment or to try to expand his business busi-ness if he fears the next congress may tamper with the standard dollar. At least he doesn't want to move until un-til he knows what the tampering will be like. Every time there is talk of inflation, the American dollar sells off and the British pound and the French franc rise in the markets of the world. This is not due entirely to the practice of selling the dollar short, frequently engaged in by European Euro-pean speculators. Some Americans are frightened into disposing of their dollars dol-lars when they hear the talk of inflation. infla-tion. The country is entitled to know just what the incoming administration is going to do on the subject of inflation. infla-tion. During the campaign we were led to believe that the Democratic party stood for sound money. Now is the time for its leadership to assure us of the fact. The growing sentiment in congress among the majority "statesmen" for inflation is not reassuring. reas-suring. The American people have known all along that there would be r.o tampering tam-pering with our monetary system so long as Mr. Hoover was in the White House. But his term is drawing to a close and soon it will be up to Mr. Roosevelt and his advisors. If Mr. Roosevelt were to let the pi'blic know in no uncertain terms just where he stands on the question ,f inflation, it might help clear up the situation. One distinguished Democrat Dem-ocrat president was not afraid to speak out when the public interest made it necessary. His name was Gro-ver Gro-ver Cleveland. The selection of Senator Glass of , Virginia as: Secretary of the Treasury would be one sign the next administration adminis-tration will frown on inflation. A reassuring re-assuring statement from the incoming president would be helpful. The defeat de-feat of the Wheeler free silver amendment amend-ment doer, not end the question, by any means. |
