Show Wild Life Abounds On National Forest The annual report of the fish and game conditions of the Manti National Nation-al forest, recently compiled, by officers offi-cers of the forest sei-vice, disclose some interesting facts and shows that the Manti forest is pretty well populated popu-lated with wild life. The estimate compiled shows there are 6,500 deer, 1,005 elk, 9G bear, 85 mountain liji:, and 1,330 coyotes on the forest. During Dur-ing the past open season, 4G0 deer and 42 elk were killed by hunters. The report also shows that 42G demand dem-and six elk have been killed by predatory pre-datory animals or have died from other causes. Nine bear, 10 lion, 485 coyotes, 105 bobcats, 51 badgers and 1,366 porcupines have been killed in the forest boundaries durng the past ' season. Representatives of the biological survey, the report shows, have killed most of the coyotes, bobcats, badgers and more than one-third of the porcupines. por-cupines. In connection with the fish and game situation on the forest, it is interesting in-teresting to note that for four of the ranger districts, the cattle owners own-ers are asking for an open season on female deer. The numbers have increased to such an extent during the past few years, it is contended, that the deer now seriously compote with the domestic stock for forr.ge. On three districts, the annual report shows, elk have also reached strH numbers that they are destroying some of the range used for spring grazing by cattle. The recent open season on elk, perhaps, scattered the herds over a larger territory, so that the damage will not be as noticeable. The increase in the elk herds, it is thought, will exceed the number killed kill-ed in the recent open season hunt, so I the injury to the range will continue. |
