Show Hunters Advised On Opening Dates With a view to correcting a misunderstanding mis-understanding among hunters who gained the wrong impression of the opening and closing of the hunting season brought out by missprints in the Salt Lake ' papers, Newell B. Cook, state fish and game commissioner, commis-sioner, has addressed a letter to thi.s paper in which he submits the correct cor-rect dates, relative to duck, pheasant, elk, deer and geese. The duck season, opening October 1 at 12 o'clock noon, will continue until sunset November 30. Due to the fact that ducks come under the federal feder-al migratory bird treaty, there will be hut two months of hunting this year. To further conform with the federal laws, Commissioner' Cook has decreed that the daily limit will be held to 15 birds instead of 25, as provided by the Utah statutes. Deer hunting season will be limited limit-ed to ten days, opening October 20 and closing October 30. One male deer with horns will be allowed each person holding a license. The pheasant hunt will start at 1 o'clock p. m. Saturday, November 5, and the date of closing and limit will be determined by a proclamation by Commissioner Cook later. Elk hunting in Utah, according to reports, will be exceptionally good and the open season has been set from November 10 to November 24, both days inclusive. According to early reports by representatives of the various sportsmen organizations in Utah, forestry officials, cattlemen and game wardens, there are 2,500 elk in the state, scattered over the various preserves, and of this number num-ber 278 bulls will subject to kill. It is estimated that the Manti herd contains 743, and of this number 125 can be taken. Hunters will be permitted per-mitted to take 25 from the Fishlake forest. Commissioner Cook has asked that hunters be real sportsmen and respect res-pect the rights of property owners in their hunting activities, and that they be careful of grass fires, paying pay-ing strict attention to cigarettes and matches that live fire is not carelessly care-lessly dropped, and above all see to it that the necessary state license has been procured. |
