Show Mayfield Quintet After Silver Cup The Mayfield Ward M Men's Basketball Bas-ketball quintet, winners of the Gunnison Gun-nison Stake trophy, will leave here Friday morning for Provo where they will play the Provo Fourth Ward, winners of Utah Stake. There will be six teams compete at Provo for the Deseret News Silver Sil-ver loving cup and the right to enter en-ter the Church finals in Salt Lake the following week. Three games will be played the first night at the B. Y. University gymnasium, the three winning teams and the best losing team will play Saturday afternoon af-ternoon and the winners of these two brackets will play for the championship cham-pionship Saturday night. A benefit dance was given in May-field May-field last night to raise funds for sending the boys to Provo, although the proceeds of the games in Provo will go towards defraying traveling expenses of the teams. Mayfield is all agog over the privilege of being the first to represent this Stake in the inter-stake contests and is also the only team south of Springville to enter the contests. Coach Clinton Christensen has a wonderful basketball team, although he had a severe blow come to him when Erough, his center, twisted his leg and broke a blood vessel last week in a game at Ephraim and will be out of the contests. His brother will take his place on the team and will fight just as hard to see the laurels come to his team. The Mayfield basketeers have won much admiration among the fans through their superior playing and their backers are confident they will "bring home the bacon" and then go into Salt Lake the following week. The Mayfield team is comprised of the following players: Joseph Wil-lardson, Wil-lardson, Lloyd Christiansen, Udell Christiansen, Nels Bogh, Roy Bogh, Lee Larsen, Ivan Hansen and Clinton Christensen, captain. |
