Show RAWLINS' REASONS. He Tells Why He Resigned a3 Utah's Delegate. Chicago, May .8. Kditor Salt Lake Herald: The reasons which influenced nie to resign were manifold. mani-fold. It was with great reluctance, as my friends know, that I permitted per-mitted my name to go before the convention which nominated me on account of the personal and business sacrifice my election would involve and my distaste to change my professional to a political po-litical life. I finally concluded, that if my party unitedly desired it I would subordinate my personal preference prefer-ence to serve the public good. I have ever since regretted the conclusion. con-clusion. When upon my recent visit to Washington I learned that there h ad bee n a p reco nee r t ed e fli r t emanating from Democratic sources to destroy the intluence for good or evil which I might possess as the elected delegate, by representing that my sentiments were hostile lo the people by whom 1 had been elected. When further I was the victim of an insulting telegram inspired from the same source, when no act or intention in-tention on my part in any way justified any such conduct, I concluded con-cluded to resign and leave the people of Utah free to elect some one who could be trusted to represent rep-resent them. I laid down the odice which to me was without honor or influence and whose duties under existing conditions I could not perform ami retain my self-respect. J. L. Rawlins. |
