Show Gunnison Sluggers Make New Records Boxing fans got real value at the carnival held at the Casino theatre t Thursday night of lasf week. They not only saw some clever "stuff" put on by local talent, but they saw lots of fun when the "kiddies," hopeful of later becoming ring generals, "did their stuff." Two complete kayos were staged during the evening, but the fighting was clean and more than the usual talent displayed. Claire Tollestrup, a member of the Gunnison Athletic club, added more laurels to his belt, when he outgeneraled Eddie Truesdale, a product of Georgia. Truesdale and Tollestrup weighed in at 140 and both were evenly matched. However, in as much as Truesdale had had a wide experience in cities of the south, along the Pacific coast, and had established a record at Salt ; Lake, it was not anticipated that the local pride, Tollestrup, would make a showing. But in this, the fans got a real surprise. The Tollesta-up-Truesdale battle was for six rounds, but Truesdale took the count in the fourth, going down for the ten and then some. Both men fought vigorously in the first tjhree rounds, each taking and giving. In the fourth, Tollestrup got in a lucky punch to Truesdales' jaw which ended end-ed the bout. Another of the interesting events was a four round battle between Bert Coates of Gunnison and "Kid" Prows of Salina. Both boys showed a real fight, but like the main event, Coates hurried a swift left to Prows' jaw in the second round. Prows went down and took the count. Prows, not satisfied satis-fied that Coates is his superior in the boxing game, issued a challenge for another fight to be staged at the next carnival here. Coates immediately t accepted the defi. The preliminaries were "fast" ones and afforded many laughs. Rees Larsen and Fred Kenney, in the "skeeter" weight class; Roy Stubbs of Gunnison and Mac Sly of Richfield; and Eldon Nielson of Gunnison and Del Flannigan of Salina, were the principals in the curtain raisers. Every Ev-ery Gunnison lad came out victorious, victor-ious, winning their bouts with ease. |
