Show I MANTI NATIONAL I FOREST NOTES -I : "I" The field day at the Great Basin Experiment Station was a decided success. Approximately forty cars carrying stockmen made the trip to the station for at least one of the two days. Many more stockmen were present this year than last, although the total number of visitors was practically the same. All reported enjoying en-joying themselves immensely. The weather was fine and the .range was so dry that the visitors left with a very poor opinion, of the Manti as a grazing forest. j Improvement of that section of the Huntington Canyon road lying be- j tween the ranger station and the forks of the canyon was started on August j 17. The work to be done at this time ; will consist of straightening out the ; alignment and improving the grade. Mr. William Hitchcock of Price will j have charge of the work. j The rangers are all busy at this j time checking up on unpermitted stock found on the range. All trespassing tres-passing animals will be driven to the nearest pound, where they will be held for damages. An interesting item was recently brought to our attention. In . 1862, Tohn Swenson of Salt Lake City constructed con-structed a two-story adobe building it 24 West on 4th South street, Salt Lake City. The building was laid on 14 inch round Douglas fir sills instead j )f the usual rock foundation. Two j ears ago, his son, J. B. Swenson, had ccasion to underpin the wall where he drip from the eaves of the house lad washed out a part of the adobe vail. In making' these -repairs it was lecessary to cut into the log founda-ion, founda-ion, and Mr. Swenson reports find-ng find-ng the foundation logs as solid as he day they were placed there. The ogs used were secured from one of he near-by canyons. Sixty-three ears underground, without deterioration, deterior-ation, is something of a record for ur native timber. R. E. Gery from the office of ands, District Office, was an office 'isitor on August 12. He was trying 0 arrange for a date with the Sup-rvisor Sup-rvisor to look over some of the daims on this forest. Bear are reported to be killing cat-le cat-le in Canal1 Canyon and sheep in phraim Canyon. Where stock are being killed, bear can be destroyed j it any time, while, after September st, there is an open season on these mimals until May 1st of the following follow-ing year. |
