Show UTAH TO BUILD FOREST ROADS $197,771 WILL BE EXPENDED UPON UP-ON HIGHWAYS OF STATE DURING DUR-ING COMING YEAR Appropriation Arrives 1924 Program and Completion of Work Stated in Last Few Years Salt Lake City. Carrying out ot the 1924 forest road program recently recent-ly agreed to betveen the state road commission and the district forest office, of-fice, is assured with the apportionment apportion-ment of $197,771 to Utah from the forest service highway and development develop-ment fund. It will enable the service to meet a deficit of approximately $48,386 needed to complete the 1923 budget. Estimated requirements to finish last year's work include $29,733 for the Kane county section of the Cedar-Long Cedar-Long Valley project; $24,377 on the Sevier river-Summit road and $10,800 for the maintenance of all completed forest highways. There was an under-run. on the Sevier-Cove Fort work of $16,524, making the net deficit needed $48, 386. The new program this year amounts to $131,143 including the following: $25,0000 for the Coal Creek canyon section of the Cedar-Long Cedar-Long Valley road; $10,000 for the bridge over the Provo river on the Kamas-Stockmore road; an additional addition-al $44,000 for the Sevier river-Summit road; $25,000 for surfacing of the Sevier-Cove Fort; $7,000 for the Widstoe-Escalante road and $15,600 for maintenance cf completed forest highways. Some of this work will have to be pruned. The money available for forest development de-velopment will enable the service to carry on 100 per cent of the budget approved for this year and still leave a surplus for purposes other than building roads and trails. This fund available for road construction con-struction only where construction will prove of material benefit in opening up the forest resources while the forest highway funds may be builded in areas not included in forest reserves as long as they serve to reach the forests. Development fund allotted Utah is $62,872. The road building budget for the current fiscal year which began be-gan last Tuesday contemplate the expenditure ex-penditure of $63,073, but of this $22,-500 $22,-500 will be advanced from the so-called so-called 10 per cent fund which is independent in-dependent of the development appropriation ap-propriation proper. The road development program embraces spending about $15,000 on the road from Kamas to the head of the Provo canyon; about $8,000 on the road from Vernal to Manila; $4,000 in the Diamond fork; $2,000 on the Fish Lake road and about $5,550 for miscellaneous roads. For road maintenance within forests for-ests proper $8,730 has been set aside; $14,495 has -been allowed for trail construction and $5,298 allowed for maintenance of trails. |
