Show AMERICAN SUGAR INDUSTRY Owing to differing interests between foreign producers of sugar and the manufacturers of sugar from beets, the tariff cuts an enormous enor-mous figure in this industry. Foreign sugar produced with cheap labor competes with beet sugar which American farmers raise. A tariff on sugar made from beets grown by American farmers is of the most vital importance because the farmers are not any too prosperous upder higher wage and better working conditions than prevail with foreign producers. The by-products from the sugar beet industry are entirely consumed con-sumed by all kinds of livestock, and add largely to total of dairy and meat products and restore fertility to the worn out farm lands. Refining raw cane sugar from all the tropical sugar-growing regions is one of the largest industries in our country, but it must never be forgotten that American beet sugar saved us from a world-war world-war sugar famine. With low sugar prices as at present it is necessary to continue reasonable protection of American sugar beet growers to save them from destruction. |
