Show war the opening of new steamship route:; by the I'anama Canal, the in-crca.'.L-J activities of the automobile for land transudation in the tropics, or e i n the increasing use of tropical products which followed pi ohibition, it is at least a fact, says the Trade Record of The National City Bank of New Yoik, that our trade with the tropics has increased approximately approxi-mately rill per cent in value since 1013, while that with the non-tropi-ca Iworld increased but about 75 per cunt in the same period. With the dangers to sea-borne com ; mevec which existed during the wai Euiopean countries gradually reduced reduc-ed their tropical imports for re-ex nidation purposes, and as a resul . i he United States developed he (lir 'ct pu; chases from the tropica comitrics and Xt the same time in f mscU her direct sales to them. Considering as tropical or at least sub-tropical the American areas lying ly-ing between northern Mexico and southern Brazil, the continent of Africa Af-rica except the South African Union, and the countries and islands lying between northern Indea, the Philli pine Islands, and central Australia the number of political divisions wit! which we inter-change merchandise countries, colonies and islands is 35 and our trade with them has growr. from approximately $1,060,000,000 h 1913 to about $2,447,000,000 in 1923 The total value of merchandise brought direct from the tropica' world (including our own tropica islands) advanced from approximately approximate-ly $340,000,000 in 1913 to about $1, 620,000,000 in 1923, while the exports to these areas increased from about $400,000,000 in 1193 to approximate $830,000,000 in 1923. While a part of this apparent increase, in-crease, says the Trade Record, it probably due to the fact that certain cer-tain tropical products prior to the war reached us from the European countries and were accredited to them in our trade statistics, it is quite apparent ap-parent that our trade with the tropics has enormously increased. Practically Practical-ly all the tropical countries have increased in-creased the percentage which American Amer-ican products form of their imports Our own official statistics show that our imports from Cuba advanced fiorn $125,000,000 in 1913 to $376,-000,000 $376,-000,000 in 1923, and the exports thereto from $73,000,000 in 1913 to $192,000,000 in 1923. Our imports from India advanced from $5,000,-000 $5,000,-000 in 1913 to $55,000,000 in 1923; and from Egypt an increase from $17,000,000 to $39,000,000. Our imports im-ports from South America increased from $198,259,000 in 1913 to $466, 817,000 in 1923, and our exports to that continent from $146,515,000 to $269,318,000. The big increases in our imports from the tropics occur in rubber, fibers, sugar, coffee, cacao, and fruits and the grains in exports to that area consist chiefly of manufactures. manufactur-es. This increase in our trade of the tropical world and especially in the market which it offers for our manu- factures is especially of interest, adds the Trade Record, in view of the great possibilities of increasing the producing and consequent buying power of that part of the world. The tropical and sub-tropical belt, extending extend-ing the world around between the 30th parallels of north and south latitude, has over one third of the habitable land area of the world, much of it with far greater producing produc-ing power per acre than that of the temperate zones, and with the increasing in-creasing exportation of its natural products which would follows improved im-proved transportation facilities by railways and automobiles would come an increased demand for the products of the American factories.
