Show Beautiful Old City Long Noted Seaport Probably the most ancient of all seaports sea-ports is Joppa, on the Mediterranean coast, the nearest harbor to Jerusalem Jerusa-lem and for centuries Palestine's most Important commercial trading port of entry. The name means "The Beautiful," and its situation well entitles It to be so called. It is built cm a lofty rocky knoll on the edge of the sen, its fortifications for-tifications facing seaward, with an encircling en-circling Willi within which its buildings are crowded tier above tier on hewn-out hewn-out terraces. Surroundng it are the luxuriant plains of the Shephelah or low country, where are the groves producing the famous Jaffa oranges, the most luscious and costly the world has yet known, the olive trees which have always furnished much of lis trade, fig trees and date palms, as well as the great wheat fields- of tba country. |
