Show Boxing Carnival Entertains Eans Fillit funs, numbering nearly two hundred, leathered at the Gunnison Valley high Hchool gymnasium ant Thursday evening and witnesed the first boxing carnival hold in the city for a couple of years. Those who failed to nee the bout: missed a good Card ami some clever boxing. 'J'hi; athletic club sponsoring the bouts endeavored to Ret Koine leal "battlers" "battl-ers" and succeeded. The main event, which was scheduled sched-uled for nix .'i-minute rounds, proved a whirlwind at the .start. The match was between Grant Nielson, well-known well-known local boxer, am! Jack Chido, of tin; Manhattan club at .Salt Lake City. During the first round, the antagonists an-tagonists took measurements, and no fierce demonstrations were shown. The second, however, showed a change, when Kielson waded in and pummelled his opponent at will, knocking him to the mat two times. Chido was weakened by the stiff body and head punches, and at the sound of the gong went to his corner dazed. The third was the final, as Nielson had the better of the scrap and after a few passes found an opening and Kent Chido to dreamland. Four preliminaries were staged,; two of which were draws and two being decisions. Bert Coates and Ray Coates, brothers, staged a fast battle for three rounds. Both showed show-ed clever science and each took some stiff punches and stood the rough part. The fight was declared a draw. Rul on Mansfield and Claire Tol-lestrup Tol-lestrup battled for three rounds and the referee called the battle a draw. Chas. Jensen was given a decision over "Bud" Lyman in a three-round mix-up. Lyman was out of his class and was easy prey for Jensen.' 1 One of the real battles during the evening was the combat between Newell Mortenson and Ivan Lund. Outside of the headliner this fight ! was one of the best on the program. I Both men went in the ring determin-j determin-j ed to wear the "feather of victory," i .ind for the entire time the boys mixed lively. Mortensen was the j heavier of the two and at the end ! of the third he was declared the victor. Orville Hansen acted as referee, and gave universal satisfaction. Fred Jones and John Knighton were the jdges and Harold Bradley acted as , timekeeper. |
