Show Midnight Fire Threatens Salina Salian city was again threatened with a disastrous fire which broke out shortly before 12 o'clock last evening and only for the presistent efforts of the volunteers, who were fighting the raging flames against great odds, the entire business section south of Main street would have been in ashes. The E. A. Thorsen building, occupied by Gilbert Larson, who was conducting a restaurant, the Rex building, where the Legion pool is located, the new meat and grocery store justed opened by August Peterson, and the Telephone Tele-phone company were the heavy losers. The restaurant building was a complete com-plete loss, the entire structure falling . prey to the flames. The damage to the other two were slight and it is estimated that the loss will be between be-tween $3,000 and $4,000, with only partial insurance. Shortly after midnight a message was received in Gunnison for fire-fighting fire-fighting recruits and many had volunteered. vol-unteered. Soon after another report came to the effect that the blaze was under control, and a final message came that the fire was again raging and several autos loaded with men and the city fire hose made a record run to Salina. The fires, by this time had been gotten under control. The fire started in the restaurant building, supposedly from a gas stove. Mr. and Mrs. Larson left for a dance about 11 o'clock and soon after the alarm was given. The building where the fire started in a wooden structure struc-ture and the adjoining buildings were protected by stone walls. Due to the fact that the restaurant building went up so quickly, and the valiant work done by the fire fighters, no doubt saved the city from a disastrous fire. A strong wind was blowing from the northeast, and this made the efforts of the volunteer fireman doubly strenuous. Gunnison, Richfield, Aurora and Redmond reponded quickly with volunteer vol-unteer fireman. |
