Show FLDQDED RIVER " HUNDREDS OF PERSONS IMPRISONED IMPRIS-ONED BY BACKWATER FROM THE ATC H AFALAYA McCrea Crevasse 13 Approximately 130 Miles North West of New Orleans New Orleans Hundreds of persons In the upper tip of Pointe Coupee parish par-ish were marroned by backwaters from the McCrea crevasse on the east bank of the Atchafalaya river as sweeping toi rents streamed over a railroad embankment em-bankment on which they had relied for protection. Failure to heed flood warnings had kept the residents in the district until the backwaters became threantenlng. Hundreds of persons were brought out on the last train operated by the Tex- j as & Pacific railroad, but is left hun- j dreds, unable to leave, except by boat. Waist-deep water poured over the rail- ! ; road embankment a half mile north of Morganza as tho train left. The McCrea crevasse Is approximately approxi-mately 130 miles northwest of New Orleans on the opposite side of the Mississippi river. The rapid spread of the flood brougLt consternation to many who had remained re-mained serenly In the threatened area, confident that their homes would not be flooded, and a steady stream cf refugees poured from Points Coupee parish into concentration camps at Baton Rouge. |
