Show Turkeys on Ranches Because of the decreasing production produc-tion of turkeys on farms, the business of raising turkeys on a large scale may develop into an Important and interesting inter-esting form of ranching. As yet, however, how-ever, turkey ranching Is in its infancy. In the unsettled foothills of California and In certain sections of Arizona, a few persons have engaged In this industry in-dustry to the extent of raising a thousand thou-sand or more turkeys each year. Here the range Is unlimited and the natural food of the turkey, such as grasshoppers grasshop-pers and other Insects, green vegetables vegeta-bles and the seeds of various weeds and grasses is abundant. Advantage is also taken of the turkey's relish for acorns, and where these are plentiful but little grajn need be used for fattening fat-tening in the fall. These large flocks of turkeys are managed much like herds of sheep, being taken out to the range early In the morning and brought home to roost at night. They are herded during the day by men, either on foot or on horseback, and by dogs specially trained for the work. |
