Show Valley Factory Ends Campaign The blowing of the factory whistle at Centerfield last Monday morning announced the closing, as far as slicing slic-ing was concerned, of the 1921-22 sugar su-gar campaign of the Gunnison Valley Sugar company. Wednesday the last of the sugar was turned out, and Wednesday evening the plant was closed so far as active work is concerned. con-cerned. It will be several days before be-fore all forces are ,laid off, however, several of the workmen being held for the final clean-up. The campaign, the second real campaign of the company, proved highly successful, according to factory fac-tory officials. During the 88 days of operation there was a total of 43,307 tons of beets sliced. The company purchased 46,453 tons of beets, but the decrease is shown in the shrinkage shrink-age of beets and of dirt purchased. This year's output, too, is slightly below that of last year. The output this season was 111,000 bags of sugar su-gar as against 113,314 last year. Through the arrangement made last year by withdrawing the territory both north and south, confining the area for beet raising for the Center-field Center-field plant to the country north of Aurora and south of Fayette and Sterling, has had the effect of curtailing cur-tailing the acreage and for this reason rea-son the production was held down somewhat. The coming season, however, how-ever, promises much better, and it is thought a larger acreage will be planted. The many improvements made throughout the big factory prior to starting the campaign this fall proved invaluable during the operating operat-ing period. Some difficulties were encountered but they proved of little hindrance in so far as fast work was concerned. The factory established and maintained a splendid record I during the period of operation. An average of 500 tons of beets per day were sliced this year while last year the average was close to 400 tons daily. About February 1st the factory will close down, and after a short vacation the engineers and mechanics mechan-ics will again go over the plant, and several important changes will be made, and when the campaign is ready to start next fall the plant will be in better shape than ever before. |
