Show Beet Toppers Given An Awful Drubbing Manager Yearnce's "Beet Toppers." meaning the Moroni baseball team, again found out that the Gunnison Sugar Kings, were superior in every class, when it comes to ball playing, to anything in the county when they clashed in a league game with the local team at Gunnison last Sunday afternoon. Gunnison has, as a rule, put up classy ball during the entire season, but the game last Sunday Sun-day outclassed any previous exhibition exhibi-tion of ball played this year, and by winning Sunday's game puts them far in the lead and makes them contenders contend-ers for the series to be played with the Sallina boys, winners of the first half of the series. Moroni came determined and with e opening of the game for two innings only when a couple of costly cost-ly errors allowed two men in the first and two in the second, to cross the home plate, it looked as though the visitors were destined to win the game. With the score at the end of the fourth inning standing four for the visitors and three for the homers, there was a movement by the locals to "tighten up." This they did and started out by knocking Jimmy Lar-on Lar-on out of the box with a home run and three safe singles. It was in this nning that Sorenson made a home-run home-run on a one-base hit. After negotiating nego-tiating first base and when the ball was tossed away by the visitors, Sorenson Sor-enson made the circuit and at all times was in the lead of the ball, reaching home plate before the ball could be fielded in after a wild pitch. Lester Fredrickson, who has been idle insofar as hitting the ball is concerned for several games past, got, a hit in the fifth with two on. In connecting with the sphere, enough speed was injected t6 send the ball far into the weeds in center filed. Fredrickson made the only home run of the game. His admirers showed their appreciation by a liberal contribution con-tribution of the coin of the realm. Manager Yearnce took the mound fa the sixth and lasted for just one round. He was hit for three safe ones and three scores were chalked up for Gunnison. At the finish of this inning Yearnce was retired and Curtis took the responsibility on his shoulders. For the two inning before be-fore the end of the game Curtis held the locals down to one hit, that by Jones and the score ended with Moroni Mor-oni four and Gunnison eleven. |
