Show Auto Smashes Buggy; Two Severely Injured Reckless Joy Riders Run Down Buggy - and Desert Injured Citizens Indignant Over Act. Notwithstanding the fact that "Bpeed maniacs" and reckless drivers driv-ers have been repeatedly warned of the danger of such practices, an accident ac-cident occurred last Sunday night at 11 o'clock that came near costing the lives of two Gunnison people. As it was, the young lady who was riding with her escort is confined to her home, suffering from a severe laceration lacera-tion on the side o her head, her left Bhoulder jammed and badly Injured, and several of her ribs loosened. The young man was thrown from the buggy he was riding in, and great patches of skin was torn from his face and his body badly bruised. While Lester Fredrickson, son of Hyrum Fredrickson, and driver of the. school truck, and Miss Ruby Roylance, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Roylance, were buggy riding Sunday evening, they were run down by a Paige car driven by Angus Hansen Han-sen of Mayfield. The accident happened hap-pened near the Centerfield garage, and when the car struck the buggy the occupants were hurled for a distance dis-tance of thirty feet, and both were rendered unconscious. The driver of the car did not stop, but kept going, go-ing, leaving the injured to the mercy of anyone who happened along. In the automobile, driven by Hansen, were Reed Christiansen, Richard Christiansen, Reed Willardson, of Mayfield, and Miss Sodonia Christen-sen Christen-sen and Miss Florence Larson of Gunnison, and two other girls, whose names were not learned. Fredrickson and Miss Roylance were driving south through Center-field, Center-field, according to Mr. Fredrickson, and when just south of the garage, the big car hove in sight, and going forty-five miles an hour. Fredrickson Fredrick-son was on the west side of the road. The car was also on the west side of the highway and going north. When Fredrickson saw that an accident was inevitable he turned his horse to the west, cramping the buggy, but of no avail. With a mighty crash the car hit the buggy, completely demolishing de-molishing the vehicle. Both Miss Roylance and Fredrickson were thrown out, but escaped being run over by the mad driver. Fredrickson Fredrick-son was catapulted some thirty feet, and for a few moments lay unconscious. uncon-scious. He regained sufficiently to crawl to where his companion lay, and pulling her from underneath the buggy, again went into an unconscious uncon-scious state, remaining that way until un-til the following morning. A passing automobile picked the injured ones up and. hurried them to Dr. Hagan's office, where first aid treatment was given. The Injured were. then taken to their respective homes. Mr. Fredrickson has recovered so as to be able to be about, but the condition of Miss Roylance is yet quite serious. The young men who were driving the car and who were out for a "joy ride," are all minors, and what action ac-tion will be taken against them has not as yet been decided. The carelessness care-lessness of the driver and owing to the fact that he was on the opposite side of the road he rightly belonged, and the added fact that the injured were left lying on the road, has made an indignant public, and sentiment has been aroused against speeding, and it is proposed to put a stop to the practice before some life is sacrificed. |
