Show Tracing Origin of "Gob." A side-light was thrown upon the word "gob" by the Scotsman of August Au-gust 4, 1S00, which said that when a meeting of the coast-guard takes place the men indulge in protracted yarns, a draw of the pipe, and a friendly chew. Such a session is invariably productive of a considerable amount of good-natured .banter, as well as free expectoration'' all around, wherefrom our friends came to be known as "gobbles" "gob-bles" (from "gob," the mouth). In the process of timo gob and gobble came to be applied to the ships manned by the gobs. |
