Show BANKERS URGE THRIFT. The American Banking association proposes a three-year thrift campaign cam-paign to reach every family in the ' country. As a part of the campaign, government officials would be called upon to practice the utmost economy so as to reduce federal expenditures. The thrift campaign does not mean to stop buying, but to start producing produc-ing and saving. We have been through an orgie of extravagance and waste. Small savers are to be the chief source in financing the normal nor-mal growth of commerce and industry, indus-try, says the association, adding that present tax policies offer a serious check to increasing investment by holders of large wealth. Not only must the individual citizen and wage earner be taught to save, but our government officials must also be impressed im-pressed with this necessity. The tax burden upon industry and commerce, and- upon the millions of savings, which would otherwise be used to finance new industries and new commerce, com-merce, is beyond all reason and in excess ex-cess of public need. |
