Show Taxpayers Demand bounty Dads to Act Committee of 100 Make Final Plea and Commissioners Promise Appropriation of $2,000 Amount Inadequate. After many parleys and conferences with the county commissioners, commission-ers, and after repeated appeals for financial aid to make the state highway between Centerfield and Axtell passable, the honorable body has agreed to give ?2,000, providing it is matched with an equal amount of work and the appropriation meets with the approval ap-proval of the state road commission. This information was telephoned tele-phoned to local members of the committee appointed to take the matter up with the commissioners by P.' P. Dyreng late last evening. Mt. Pleasant, according to reports, will be allotted $3,000. Before any appropriation could be granted it was necessary for nearly 1 00 citizens from Gunnison, Centerfield and Axtell to go before the commissioners with a final plea. At the conference held at the court house in Manti Tuesday feeling was at fever heat and several clashes with members of the commissioners and citizens were averted by wiser heads. While the south end of the county has the chance of getting the $2,000 appropriation at this time, there is a faint chance c having more added later in the summer. ly back of the commissioners in borrowing bor-rowing sufficient money to care for the roads. Commissioned Drap.-insisted Drap.-insisted that a sufficient amount bo added to provide Mt. Pleasant with a rock crusher. The motion made by Christensen was: "That it be the sense of this delegation that it would be wisdom on the part of the county commissioners commis-sioners to borrow sufficient money at this time, against the state road fund for this year, to repair those state roads in Sanpete county which are in an impassable condition." The following amendment was offered by Mayor Jones: "That this money be expended on those four miles, more or less, on the basis of 50-50 provided the work is started within five days from this date, and ' must be completed lay approximately April 1st. ' When the motion and amendment were put to a vote there was not a dissenting voice, the .entire delegation dele-gation voting in favor of both. What action is to be taken relative rela-tive to the expenditure of the funds that are to be appropriated for the south roads, has not as yet been determined. de-termined. In the first place the amount to be appropriated will be insufficient in-sufficient to meet the needs and to attempt to repair the four miles with , the amount stated, would" be wasting wast-ing he taxpayers money. A meeting meet-ing of the committee will likely be called for tonight or tomorrow and at that time definite action will be taken. While the amount of funds promised pro-mised as an appropriation for the immediate relief of the roads in the southern part of the county is in-; in-; adequate and will only provide for j the repair of a portion of the high-I high-I way, the committee from this section feel that there is a rank discrimination discrimina-tion against the Gunnison Valley and this was strongly intimated at the conference with the commissioners last Tuesday. In fact the statement was made that if the commissioners and those in the northern part were not sufficiently interested in providing provid-ing passable roads, other steps would be taken by the committee, elected commissioner from Moroni, had little hesitancy in stating that provision had been made for the road repair in this valley and planly stated that if the citizens did not want, it it would be applied elsewhere. else-where. When it was announced that $750 had been allotted to South Sanpete, San-pete, the committee quickly stated that it would be useless to attempt to do anything with that amount, as it would be a wilful waste of funds to attempt to fix the roads with so small amount. The Manti club, with Glen Jensen, Attorney Lewis Larson, A. H. Christensen and Mayor Madsen as spokesman, came to the aid of the South Sanpete committee with strong arguments favoring a substantial appropriation for road repair work. The old plea, "up against it for money" was the real argument advanced ad-vanced , by the commissioners for withholding any appropriations. Lewis Larson and Judge Christ eh- sen, in addressing the commissioners, pointed out that the county was amply able to negotiate loans sufficient suffic-ient to meet the emergencies for road building. Mayor J. W. Jones, who with N. L. Hermansen, was appointed as spokemen for the committee, strongly strong-ly impressed the commissioners with the importance of immediate aid. Mayor Jones gave a vivid description of what the travelers had to contend con-tend with during the past few years, and more particularly the past year, when beet and pulp haulers and travelers floundered in the sja of mud and slush. "We must have some relief before the coming fall when the beet harvest starts," continued con-tinued Mayor Jones, "or else our farmers will be unable to get their crops to the factory and the net result re-sult will be a closed factory and a j bankrupt valley." ' Lewis larson did not mince words when he addressed the commissioners. commission-ers. He stated that it was a disgrace dis-grace to maintain disgraceful roads in a civilized community and he urged the commissioners to bon-ow sufficient ' money to not ' only repair the roads in the southern part of the county, but to also provide for other ! sections where the roads need repairing. re-pairing. Judge Christensen, backing the Gunnison Valley delegation, advocated advocat-ed the borrowing of money and when he made a motion to the effect that the visiting taxpayers stand siuare- |
