Show Former Gunnison Man In Limelight Colonel B'illie Mayfield intended to put 0. V. Sanders, editor of the Houston Press, in prison and keep him there without trial during martial mar-tial law in Galveston, according to May-field's answer to Sanders' suit for $25,000 damage, says a Houston, Hous-ton, Texas, dispatch. Mayfield ordered the arrest of Sanders San-ders August 30, 1920, following criticism crit-icism in The Press of martial law at Galveston and the conduct of national nation-al guard officers. Officers sought to arrest Sanders at the Houston Country club, fifty miles from the martial law zone. Sanders' suit aims to uphold the constitutional rights of free speech and tree press. Mayfield denies that malice prompted the arrest but recites that "even if the defendant did not have a lawful right to arrest Sanders, they did have a right to protect themselves from the vicious and ocw-ardly ocw-ardly attacks of Sanders against them." G. V. Sanders, a native of Gunnison Gunni-son is well remembered here, having attended the grammar schools of this' city. Ho is a brother of Daunt Sau-ders. |
