Show Boy Scouts On Initial "Hike" The Boy Scouts of Gunnison had their first "hike" and "camping out" stunt of the season last Saturday and Sunday. Under the leadership of Scoutmaster Roy Madsen, twenty of the members of the local organization, organiza-tion, with packs of bedding and provisions, pro-visions, left Gunnison Saturday afternoon after-noon at 4 o'clock for Funk's Lake, some twelve miles from here. The trip was made In remarkably good time, the army of little fellows reaching reach-ing the destination at 7:30. After a refreshing meal and a short rest the Scouts were ready for a romp, and a splendid evening was spent in playing games and relating "reminiscences." Later blankets were spread and the lads eagerly sought their beds for a restful sleep. The following morning with regularity regu-larity of "real soldiers" "mess" was served and beds packed for the return trip. Before' returning, however, a visit was made to a coal mine some two miles farther up the canyon. The mine was thoroughly inspected and proved intensely Interesting to many of the boys who were novices. The -boys returned to Gunnison Sunday morning, arriving here about 11 o'clock and notwithstanding the fact that practically all had blistered and tired feet and bodies, they reported re-ported a splendid time. Later in the season the Scouts will take another "hike," going farther into the mountains, moun-tains, and the trip will be prolonged for a week or more. |
