Show Beauty In Seaweed. Contemplating seaweed, Hie curator of this department In the New York botanical gardens has made a suggestion, sug-gestion, timely with regard to the present exhibition of specimens In the Metropolitan Museum of Art, that here may be found many a charming suggestion, sug-gestion, hitherto unnoticed by artists, 'or the creation of decorative designs. One Is reminded of the passage in which Ruskin tells ' how the Greek architect found a beaullful design in the movement of ocean waves; and wonders that Husk in himself, with his keen appreciation of art suggestions in nature, did not deal with the varied beauty of design discoverable in the different seaweeds. Perhaps he did, and one has forgotten it; at tiny rate seaweed has not, It seems, yet supplied sup-plied suggestion for the design of lace, tapestries, prints, and architectural ornament, and the idea adds material for the work of designers. |
