Show Organize Fire Fighters In City Two fires during the past year and a half have resulted in the destruction destruc-tion of the buildings that were attacked at-tacked by the flames, and yet Gunnison Gunni-son has no organized' system of fire 1 fighting. The fire at the home of Susan Vorhees Vor-hees last Sunday morning at 11 o'clock gave a fair illustration of the inadequacy for combating the flames and should serve as a lesson to the good citizens who would protect the interests of all. Unable to make connections con-nections with the large fire hydrant in the street and being unable to procure pro-cure sucifllent water from the yard hydrant., the building was destroyed, though plenty of willing volunteers were present to cope with the fire had there been a way of securing water. wa-ter. And, too, there was lack of organization or-ganization in fighting the fire. The' system was bunglesome and little headway could be made. What Gunnison needs, as all other well regulated cities have, Is an or-: ganized fire department, and the: sooner tho organization is effected and drilled in the art of fire fighting. '; tho better off the city will be. There ,- are plenty of willing and capable; men for such an organization and with the aid of the city in furnishing ! apparatus and hose, the safety of our homes will bo greatly enhanced. |
