Show Start Movement For New Chapel Initiative steps were taken at a mass meeting held at the Casino theater the-ater last Tuesday night to assemble funds to erect a chapel for the L. D. S. church for the Gunnison ward. A goodly crowd was present, and much enthusiasm was manifest in the movement started. According to the -- announcement made, it is proposed to build a structure costing $50,000 or more, and it is planned t?o raise half of this amount in this ward, the balance bal-ance being supplied by the state organization. or-ganization. Bishop E. L. Swalberg acted as chairman of the meeting and in his introductory remarks outlined the needs of a chapel for Gunnison. "Gunnison needs a church, and needs it badly,"- said Mr. Swalberg. "We need a place of worship and also a place where we can enjoy dancing and meet together as a place of amusement. We can have just such a place, and it is to be hoped that all will join in furnishing Gunnison with an edifice that will do credit to the city." Parley Christiansen further impressed im-pressed upon the citizens the needs of the chapel, and made comparisons with other communities nearby, all of which have modern places for worship wor-ship and amusement. The speaker added that if a chapel was built here and other needed structures erected, it would not be long until Gunnison would lie one of the large cities of the state. "I am back ot' the movement as far as my means will permit," said Wm. Metcalf. "Gunnison needs a new rmii-i'ti unit wi. realize it will cost money, and we can and must build it. And we must build one that will be a credit to our city, and when this is done I will be one that will attend the! meetings." I J. M. The meeting was enlivened by several sev-eral selections from a. male quartet, 'cello solos and readings. |
