Show SEVIER RIVER BEST IN WEST At a meeting of prominent men. familiar with the water conditions throughout the Intermountain west, held at Delta last week, the fact was brought out that with the exceptions of the Strawberry Project, the Sevier Se-vier river was furnishing one of ths best, if not the best water rights in the intermountain country. As is well known by the public the arid states of the west are exprienc-ing exprienc-ing the worst drouth since 1905 and in some sections the water supply conditions are the worst in history. On the Weber river in northern Utah, and the Snake river in Idaho, as well as the Humbolti n Nevada, the conditions are very critical and all water rights established during the past 35 years have been cut off until conditions improve along the streams. The water rights under the-Bear the-Bear river in Utah and Idaho, are being partially served by the Utah Power, a light company, which is pumping 1100 second feet daily from Bear lake to run thier power plants further down the river. Were it not for this procedure the Bear river would be practically dry. Conditions on the Provo are extremely ex-tremely bad and with the exceptions of the main Sevier river, all streams in the southern part of the state are at a record low stage. Regardless of the present conditions condi-tions the water supply could have been increased approximately 5 0 per cent by the judicious use and at the proper time. It follows that in, order or-der to obtain such use the old decreed water rights should be pooled in the various water resrvoirs for use as desired. de-sired. The flow on the Sevier river on July 2S, below Fayette, was 105 second feet. Fifteen years ago at the same point was probably not mora than 10 second feet. This increase is due to return seepage from the lands above. |
