The suasion was attended by practically practi-cally every physician in the two counties. Dr. Peck after the convention conven-tion took Dr. Beatty about the city for a survey of conditions, great improvement im-provement over that of a year ago being noted. Di. Beatty remained over for the evening, when he gave a public lecture lec-ture to a large and representative audience at the R. S. hall, a goodly number being present from Mayfleld, Axtell and Fajette. Mayor J. M. Knighton presided and several entertaining enter-taining musical numbers were given. Dr. Beatty's lecture was listened to with wrapt attention. He started with & compliment to the physicians of the state for their pride in telling people how to keep well. Their advice, ad-vice, he pointed out, was not valued to the extent it should be and correspond corre-spond disease was prevalent. lie Instanced In-stanced whooping cough from which more deaths occur than from scarlet fever and diphtheria combined, combin-ed, due principally to indifference about reporting cases because of the erroneous impression that whooping oough is of slight consequence. He spoke of rabies or hydrophobia which has recently 'gained foothold In Utah, and advised strict measures by the civic authorities to prevent its being spread, specially advocating the use of muzzle for dogs at the first sign of encroachment. The speaker then branched on the subject of sanitation and scored Gunnison Gun-nison for Its severe mark last year on vacant lots, fences, corrals and buildings. build-ings. However, the excellency of our water system he admitted was a redeeming feature. But on this Ctnterfield now comes to the front, he remarked, while it excelled Gunnison Gun-nison on several other points a year ago. 'Files are a social set," declared Dr. Beatty but it is important that Ihey be discarded, as well as the weeds, for both are notable disease breeders. Changes come gradually and persistent effort on the part of communities to make clean surroundings surround-ings has reduced the death rate quite pjaterlally. This can be done to a Jarge degree by vigorous attention to fly swatting, by keeping outhouses screened and the corrals cleaned. The presence of Dr. Beatty in our City and the valuable talk he gave on matters of health should be an inspira tlon for renewed action by the community com-munity In the campaign for clean (owns in Utah. |
