Some loUO people gathered at Gidney's grove in' the morning to hear the very fine program winch, though short, was one of the most, creditable and interesting ever rendered in this City. J.. nes was a masterly effort. Mr. Jones' congressional siyW of dec la lu at ion is clear, strong and powerful. He well deserved the compliment best iwed subsequently bv Prof. Lewis. The oration bv Prof. T. B. Lewis, of Ogden. was fall of spirit and patriotic zeal. It was a strong address, and was listened to with wrapped attention by the large assembly. Next came the sentiment, "Utah," by A. H. S;mw. Mr. Snow's speech was eloquent elo-quent and nicely couched in flowery flow-ery language and replete with sriking figures of speech. Each of the orators was frequently interrupted inter-rupted with loud, imeprcssib!" bursts of enthusiastic applause. The solo by Miss Amelia. Grac-hl and the double quartette were greeted with appreciative plaudits, i Tho program throughout was an j excellent one. Bio nicing and games were i n d u Iged' in until five o'cl 1 ic k . when the horse races at B othe- r track drew a large and interested crowd of spectators. A. E. Snow's horse ook first prize and Leslie Nichols' stepper took second prize in the trotting races. The slow race took the cake. The lire works at night, operated by Dr. Berg and his sou, Lewis, attracted at-tracted an immense throng. There wen.' scores of teams and probably 2,000 people present. Tne display was a good and satisfactory one, if n.-t conduetid on an extensive scale, w Irch the limited funds prohibited. Every one was apparently appar-ently pleased with' it. Many business and private hoiisi s in town were decorated quite handsomely, our dear old ! Hag Heating from scores of house tops. Taking it all in ail we pronounce our Fourth an unqualified success, yet susceptible of improvement. Put if furnished necessary amusement amuse-ment for our near neighbors and ourselves. It brought money info the City; kept hundreds of our denizens and their holiday money at home. It also went to show that the citizens of fait Brig-ham Brig-ham City are loyal, patriotic; anil orofoiind and earnest lovers ol our grand old nation, its revered star spangled banner, its broad and beloved be-loved principles, and that immortal (lay which nsh"red freedom into a trammehd and benighted world toe Fourth of July.
