Show RABBI FREUND TELLS OF VISIT TO CLARION. Deseret News. From the hopeless environment of the sweat shop to the freedom qf farm life in the open country, members of the Jpwish race are beginning' to gather in Clarion, down in southern Utah, whore the Jewish colony by that name is starting under moat auspicious circumstances, i Rabbi Charles J. Freund, who is an interested member in this movement, speakiug of the visit to the project made by Gov. William Spry and oth ers recently, said : "Gov Spry, George T. Odell, Har- old Siegel, William Cluff and myself went down a week ago by automobile to Clarion from Sslt Lake City. We left at 6 a. m., and arrived there at 4:30 p. m. The roads were in excellent ex-cellent shape. 'On tne arrival there, the party found a great sign bearing the word 'Welcome' stretched across the road suspended by a post from either side of the thoroughfare. Two little children chil-dren were waiting with a cake, which tbey presented to the gov ernor. "There are at the present time 22 men, 11 women and 30 children loca ted there. The last 11 arrivals from the eastern cities have not brought their families with them yet. Many difficulties were surmounted by the original settlers on this site. But these 11 started work Sept. 10 last fall and worked alone until March 8. They have cleaned up 1,500 acres by this time, clearing up the sagebrush,, plowing and harrowing and sowing the ground with oats and wheat The oats already are Bix inches high and the wheat eight inches. It is an irrigation irri-gation scheme and intensive farming lines are being followed throughout the whole scheme. The land was bought from the state, originally granted by the government for educational edu-cational purposes "The neighboring farm people and the people of Gunnison, Utah, assisted assis-ted in giving a welcome to the party of visitors. So there was no lack of numbers in the entertainment which followed. PLAN OF COLONIZATION. "There are 11 houses erected and the visiting delegation gathered in the shed adjoining Benjamia Brown's house where we enioved dinner. Ben- jamin Brown is the president of the colony at Clarion. He declares that this is one solution of the sweatshop evil and the congestion of the members mem-bers of the Jewish race iu the large eastern American cities. The colony has a waiting list of 150, each of whom pays $300irito the colony organization or-ganization to pay for machinery, the initial coat of the land to the state and wages for the men. The men receive $15 a week wages apiece and the land purchased from the State of Utah costs the colony orgonization $46 an. acre. The colony has 10 years in which to pay for tea land." Rabbi Freund stopped in his de scription of the visit to the colony logo lo-go back a few years in the history of this movement. "Five years ago," he said, "Jacob H. Schiff, of New York City, gave 1500.000 to the city of Galveston to be used iu preventing emigrants from Eui'ops from landiug in New York, Philadelphia, Boston and Baltimore ; and on the other hand to bring it a-bout a-bout that thsy should come direct from Bremen and other European port-) to Galveston and to be sent out to the western states from Texas instead in-stead of crowding into the congested districts of the large eastern cities. There was a great step in advance for those visitors when the mayor of Galveston Gal-veston greeted them on their landiug there. They did not understand the language in which the welcome was couched, but they understood the cordiality of the greeting by the handshake of the mayor.
