Show DEMOCRATIC VICTORY IN MAINE Plaisted Elected Govern by Big Majority, While Next Legislature Legisla-ture May Be Democratic. Portland, Me. Maine went Democratic Demo-cratic on Monday. It elected Frederick Freder-ick W. Plaisted of Augusta, a Democrat, Demo-crat, as governor; upset the hitherto solid Republican congressional delegation dele-gation in at least two, and possibly four, of the districts, and, to the sur prise of the political leaders, Democratic Demo-cratic as well as Republican, the returns re-turns indicate the probability that the next legislature will be Democratic. Congressman Burleigh, with an eighteen-year record at Washington, finds himself deefated by his old-time opponent, Samuel W. Gould of Skow-hegan. Skow-hegan. Governor Fernald's administration was stoutly defended against Democratic Demo-cratic criticism of extravagance, and most of the voters were given an opportunity op-portunity of seeing and hearing the candidate, while a few out-of-state ' speakers, including Congressman Mo Kinlay of California, came here to help. |
