Show GRIT OF FARMER. Captured Five Men Who Had Robbed Him and Forced Them to Disgorge. Muskogee, Okla. In the San Boia mountains, single-handed and in the dark, James Beck, a farmer residing near Stigler, Oklahoma, early Friday captured five robbers who had robbed him of $2,000, recovered part of the money and then made an ineffectual attempt to land his game in jail. Two were wounded, but all escaped. Sunday morning the men broke into Beck's house and escaped with his money. Arming himself with a revolver re-volver the farmer started In pursuit. He trailed the robbers day and night until at dusk Thursday he saw them enter the San Bois mountains, seventy miles southwest of Muskogee. He laid in wait till darkness covered cov-ered the robbers' rendezvous and when finally the quintette fell asleep Beck approached yelling "Hands up; cover them, boys." Leading the rob' bers to believe they were surrounded, Beck forced them to return $1,600 of his money, all they had left, and attempted at-tempted to bring them to Muskogee to jail. Learning that their capture had been effected by one man, the men made a dash for liberty. They escaped, but not until two of them had been shot and wounded by Beck, how badly is not known. |
