Show THE GREAT CANAL DAM. A Force of Men Ntrenclhenlnc the Weak 11 ace a and Bunding the Dam. Late advices from our Collinston correspondent bring news of the work now being vigorously prosecuted prose-cuted in Bear River gorge by the Bear River Canal company. The canal company is rushing things. It now has from thirty-five thirty-five to forty men and several teams hard at work, early and late, repairing re-pairing the late great break in the canal embankment, which has necessitated avast amount of work and considerable expense, and strengthening all weak places. The land slides and washes in the gorge have caused a great deal of trouble and inconvenience all summer long. This they are trying to put a stop to. Engineer Fortier has the work in hand and is doing it up thoroughly, too. A great stone wall is being built immediately in front of the huge dam. To give this permanency and tremendous strength, it is being extended below the old foundation, even deep into the hard, rocky bed of the river. By the; aid of this piece of work, the colossal dam can laugh at the comparatively insignificant force of the waters of the river when they arc once more turned against it. |
