Show polio foundation grants U large sum of money mone y the national foundation for in fantle paralysis thursday granted the university of utah 86 to con dinue a search for chemical corn com which might prove effective against polio pollo announcement of the grant was made by dr A ray U pres ident and basil 0 conner president of the national foundation directing the project will be dr louis P gerheardt Geb heardt head of the de apartment part ment of bacteriology at the U with dr wilham william J burke head of the department of chemistry aid ing in chemical studies one phase of the program will be an extended chemical analysis of crude gallic acid which has been found effective particularly particular lym in its commercial state against paralytic polio in experiments on animals the acid is used widely by photograph ers something done to gallic acid during the commercializing process apparently sets up a compound that we must isolate analyze and then test the U scientists agreed they said that many nerve cells affected by the disease recover and they hope that some substance can be found that will give enough extra support to the recovery processes to save additional cells thus prevent mg ing or reducing paralysis |
