Show national political review by BONNIE WILSON green river high school graduate and student of political science university of utah russians continue stubborn REPORTS FROM washington from the united nations from some of the capitals of europe concern efforts of the western estern world to neg with red russia rusia the sum mary of these reports leaves a feel mg ing of frustration almost hopeless ness the feeling grows that dealing with ith russia on any reasonable and equitable basis is practically impo isible everywhere the negotiators negotiate rs hit the hard wall of communist opp position the unwillingness of the soviets to yield slightly to compro comero mise even a little in an effort to ac bieve an agreement they simply want their way want it all and precisely as it suits them at the moment the two chief dis agreements regard the american plan for reciprocal aerial inspect tion and the french proposal for world disarmament by compromise and the american suggestion has been made before the french plan Is s new both get the same answer answers fr om russia no the soviets say they are willing to talk about the subject they are always willing to talk but they make it plain m advance of any meeting that the answer is now and will continue to be no instead of these proposals russ la ia goes back to her perennial ar aument and contends that before all else ground forces should be reduced and atomic weapons abol dished the soviets ask for ground reduction and atomic abolition with out providing for any means of in spec tion any guarantee whatever that the nations will keep their words and live up to their contracts they simply ask for trust and good faith which is a strange almost a far cical request from russia at the same tune time too that rus sia makes her suggestion about abol ishma atomic weapons russian sc leftists ts are conducting a series of nuclear explosions more powerful than any previously orgina originating ting in that country the indications are th at the blasts are m he area of hy by drogen weapons infinitely more destructive than strictly atomic ex plo it is a trying time a frustrating era and we are dealing with a sh lewd and stubborn enemy it does not mean however that all neg should end and that all doors between russia and the west should be closed diplomatic lon ion ships and periodic conferences may not solve our difficulties but they do enable us to keep in touch with russian thinking with russian progress they give us a better ch ance to deal with the russians and offset their schemes and machin actions |
