Show I The New Chief Of Police THE assumption of authority by the new chief of police brings a sense of security to very many people in Salt Lake City which they have not felt for a long time, for they know that while there will not be an end of crime here, they are assured that no known desperadoes will make their homes here and bo a menace to the peace of the city. Chief Shores has a splendid record; first as an incorruptible man; second, as one who has an inherent instinct to ferret out criminals and bring them to justice, and also that all the I desperate criminals know the chief and will fight shy of doing anything that will bring them into his toils. We look for a reduction of outrages in this city, but while we do not expect crimes j to cease, we do expect that there will not be I hold-ups just around the corner from the police po-lice station, while the police are busy and hoping to arrest some unfortunate citizen who may commit com-mit the unpardonable crime of drinking a schooner of beer four minutes and a half after 12 o'clock at night. By this we are not criticising anybody, but simply trying to make clear the fact that a chief of police to be really efficient must have the natural qualifications required to fill the office which may be described as, first, an honest man; second, an inherent knowledge of the duties of the office and a tenacity of purpose pur-pose to fill every detail of the duties of the office. |
