Show H -"- SAUNTERINGS H I At a recent dinner a young couple who have f a cunning daughter were discussing children in mi general with others at the table, and the mother M , remarked that she did not understand why their fl, daughter cried so much. M "Do you rock it?"' aBked one of the other M guests. H "No," said the proud father, "We never have M any handy." B 1 Hero is a gem from the San Francisco News M Letter anent a recent function which caused some m consternation in the Metropolis of the coast. The Hj storx. reads as follows. M "Hans Breitman gaf a barty, ver iss dot barty H now,'" So did the Chinese of the city, this week, Hr and disruption entered as suddenly and violently N as it did in the case of the Society upon the Hfl. Stanislaus. With three Chinese belles in contest, M backed by three parties of up-to-date queueless H Chinese gallants, and the Indoor Yacht club on H the sidelines, how could it have ended otherwise? H, At th last moment of voting the Yacht club H threw in a bunch of 120,000 votes, value $G00, and H landed their candidate as a winner Rosie Yuen, a H Chinese dancing girl at Tait's. Young China tore V the sky in rage, and declared no outsiders should H interfere in a strictly Chinese celebration. The H, officials of the Chinese Six Companies tried to H1' straighten out the tagnle by giving all three belles H compensation in prizes. Young China refused to H accept any such compromise. Later one group H cf the contestants snapped at the idea of taking H their candidate, Rosie Lew, to a Chinese reception B and ball being given at the Fairmont hotel, and H.: having her crowned there. Her life was threat- H ened by the opposing faction if she attempted, H but she was crowned with a cordon of police H guarding the ceremony. The Kaiser will have to H pull off Borne bigger stunts If he thinks to reach Hk the class of the new San Francisco. All this goes H, to show that the microbes of war, grim and som- H bre, and other kinds of bellicose infusoria, fill the H air these days on the slightest provocation. This B thrill in high Chinese society is almost as hair H raising as the haut ton wedding ceremonies in H New York, Burlingame and East Oakland, where H the semi-hysterical curiosity seekers tear dresses H or their way through the packed, excited throng H and mob the bride's carriage to get a glimpse of H her toilette and folderolls. Such things were quite H common in the stone age, according to the Smith- H' sonian anthropologists, and we know of no better H or more accurately polite apologists in their line. B With the present drift of our combined Chinese V and Caucasian society now in full swing, twenty B years from now will surely see the police and H militia necessary referees in all big formal func- Hr tions.
