Show IN THE SPOl LIGHT. One or two show houses in town aro brooding brood-ing trouble. The management in one or two places insisted on tho statomont that tho people want a dirty show. That probably is tho rankest sort of error, and a wise manager will not fall into it. Tho unwiso manager will translate soiw hoodlum shout into tho language of popular approval, ap-proval, and will wako up somo morning to road a warrant of arrost. And ho will deserve it. The thfory that because tho price of an admission ticket is as low as ton conts, the show has to bo smutty, is an incorrect theory You can see tho best picture show on earth for a dime and see it in 'Salt "Lake, top, Tho i tun. show which caters to tho salacious ougln u be closed, and it will bo closed. And if any one thinks a vaudeville stunt is of added value because be-cause it crosses tho borderland of decency, that "any one" is either silly or criminally perverse. Never mind what certain people want, if a manager thinks his coffers arc filled by the base tho maudlin and tho vulgar, he is mistaken. He couldn't run a day on the patronago of the profligate The solid income comes from solid people They want merit not mud! They want I decency because thoy aro decent. And they don't want depravity. 1 am naming no names, nor claiming censorship censor-ship for tho Weokly. But I am saying frankly that tho vulgar show will not bo tolerated in Salt Lake. Persistence in that course will wake a wave of opposition the force of which will hurt every theatre in town. These scrubs who shamo tho name of theatricals with their dirty shows aro doing more to strengthen tho cause of Sunday closing than all-thc churches in town can do. In addition to which, thoy are inviting attention at-tention to tho slimy condition of their souls, Wi depravity of their tastes, and the baseness of a spirit willing to prostitute a great agency to l ho getting of smutty money. |
