Show ' SUFFKAGK SETBACK IX MICHIGAN. Suffrage was beaten in Michigan, although a year ago It seemed certain that women of that 1 state would be given tho ballot to which thoy are entitled. The reason for this change of public opinion is easy to find. It Is tho mad actions of women In Groat Britain. A year ago there was no great opposition in Michigan to woman suffrage, and the amendment could have passed at that time by a largo vote. It has been lost by 25,000 majority. Men who were willing to allow women I the ballot, or who took no particular Interest In the matter were quickened Into active opposition I by the lawless work of women in England. Of J course, It Is foolish to think that American women ! would behave in tho unseemly and unlawful man ner thnt the women of England do, but men wont i around toll! aach other that if women got tho j ballot thoy vould either rule or raise a row, and ' it was bettor not to give It to them. American women, however, are like American mon; If they 1 are beaten thoy bow to the will of tho majority. f Michigan suffragists aro not dismayed, and will try again In two years. |
