Show Hli Womans Light THE STRUGGLE of manhood to assert itself it-self and to demand its inalienable rights H is a very old one; the struggle of those H who attain to power to hold it and at last to B claim it as a divine right, was old in the days of H Solomon. These contending forces have been B churning the old world as u storm lashes Una sea H for many centuries. They are still struggling H on in southern Europe. B In nothing did the fathers of this republic so B clearly display their sagacity as when they plan- H ned this government of ours in a way to secure- H to all in authority their absolute rights and at H the same time to secure to the humblest citizen H his absolute rights, equal in every righteous op- H: portunity for every other man, no matter how H; high his station. H That is what gives to our flag its special H splendor. It symbols the death of superstition in H the world; the death of slavery to man and to woman, and the exalting of both through that emancipation. It is still fought in places; by faithless priests; by the brutality of many .either through pov a or through bribery, for the use is alike degrading to those who administer and those who receive it; but it is no longer general. Manhood is asserting itself more and more every day; more and more enlightenment is shining into the souls of men every day; many things tolerated in every state of our republic fifty years ago have become Intolerable now; religious differences are breaking down; men are giving credit to their fellow men's opinions and not many claim that they have the only infallible rights. On the other hand, among the lowly and the poor there is constantly a louder and louder cry of "show me." The mills of the gods are grinding slowly, but are grinding exceedingly small. |
