Show Mind Over Matter THE Medical Record states that it has been established that the wounded of a victorious victor-ious army oftener recover than those of the defeated army; that a beaten army cannot ward off contagion nearly so successfully as a victorious one, and a French army surgeon writes to the Medical Press of the physical intoxication in-toxication of victory and the extent to which bodily pain can be vanquished by the sense of military triumph. That all seems reasonable The mind has everything to do with the body over which it pr' des. A man is very much as ho has trained himself to be. Men in the excitement excite-ment of a battle lose the sense of fear; why should chey not in the same way lose the, sense of pain? Under great excitement the strength of a man is often doubled. That means merely that the body is more completely under control of the mind than when in a normal state. The Christian Scientists believe that when perfectly under the influence of their faith, they can kill pain by nerely willing' to, or rather that V to believe in suffering is a mistake, that there should be no such thing and will not be when perfect faith is obtained. The truth is that we do not know very much about ourselves. That we are here, alive, and capable of exquisite enjoyment is mystery enough to give a mortal something to study as long as he lives. Paul tells of the time when this mortal shall put on immortality. That will be no greater event than the other one, that from nothing called us here with our hopes and fenrs. We receive news that shocks us, and were some one holding our wrist, he would note that the t pulse had slowed down twenty per cent. Not infrequently in-frequently we hear where it stops entirely. The depression upon the soul kills the body. Why should not a great triumph have the opposite effect? |
