Show 1 1 Society Sauntering. I l Again we're to lose the charming little er-um-er globe trotter. She has recklessly ac-fi ac-fi cepted an invitation to visit her husband, and means to stay some time. t Her system of small talk is at least unique, v and it is nobody's fault if she will talk loud enough for the walls to hear. The conversation . as reported ran as follows: "Yes, my husband has asked be to visit him, and I suppose I must go. I haven't seen him for i months, and really it is up to me to go home occasionally. His turn now, you see, and he gets so peevish if I don't come through with the hap- py smile occasionally. But my, it will be lone-r lone-r it some "Why, dearie, you musn't" "There, I knew I'd get no sympathy from you, but all right. I can bear my sorrow alone, just I as I did in New York when I wanted two gor- geous costumes, and couldn't possibly get more than one. I was fretting about the unfortunate I state of affairs while I was being fitted, and got an inspiration from a pretty little thing who was fitting me, for she was interested, and deeply sympathetic, and said, 'why does madam not haf two hoosbands? Zen she could haf both ze dresses?' But good bye, dear, I must go to town." "Good bye and better luck, have a good time." "Have a good time you forget there is nothing noth-ing informal about this affair, invitation entirely, and, besides, I'm going to be with my husband." There hasn't been an overwhelming bunch of excitement during the week, and aside from the original idea brought into effect by a physician who knocked a woman down with an automobile, and then placed her in the vehicle and took her I away for treatment, not even the swish of a new I gown has ruffled the lazy atmosphere. There's I - a bit of summer in the ozone a condition not conducive to teas and tight things, and besides Sothern and Marlowe and Drew, all appearing one week, have demanded a great deal of attention. atten-tion. Three stars in one week a little fast for the cerebrum rural, which has the habit of wishing wish-ing ,on. shooting stars but not when they're all in a bunch. t$ t$ 1$ There will be a table d'hote dinner at the Country Club this evening. Earlier in the day Mrs. A. H. S. Bird, Mrs. Union Worthington and Mrs. J .Walcott Thompson will be the hostesses, and clock golf and tennis will be the special athletic features. On Tuesday, May 30th, a buffet lunch will be served at the club, preceding which there will be much fussing with the divining golf rod. tC ,t3 Speaking of that word buffet, there is a sign in the fashionable hotel in town which reads "Buffet Room." t$ Clem Schramm entertained at an elaborate dinner at the Alta Club on Sunday evening for Mrs. Will Clawson, a dozen other congenial spirits, and another man. The dinner was as delightful de-lightful as are all of the affairs given by this young man, and that is telling it all, except to mention the beautiful decorations of American Beauties which were there in abundance. 5 The largest party seen at the theatre on Monday Mon-day evening was that given by Miss Selma Wall for about fifteen of her friends. & & & Miss Dorothy Kinney has returned from a long visit to Portland, and will spend the summer sum-mer here. Captain Morrow has gone to San Francisco, where he will enter the transport service. His promotion, which came unexpectedly, will take him away permanently, much to the regret of a very large circle of friends he has made while here. He will spend most of his time between San Francisco and Manila on the Sheridan, and there is little likelihood of his return, which will be particularly sad to his friends at tennis. I It is nice for young people to take such an in terest in the animals at the Park that they feel it their duty to walk there every afternoon. But they aren't a bit careful. They were comrades in arms for fair on Monday afternoon, and if they aren't going to announce their engagement, somebody else should. t$ 5 ? Miss Gertrude Mayer, one of the brides of June, was the guest of honor at a high tea given by Mrs. Edward Moore on Wednesday evening. 5 A man named Joel Priest called at our office during the week, and told us how to run a newspaper. news-paper. That's what makes our edition late this week, and paid subscribers will please excuse. There will be no delay next time he comes we'll be ready for him. Idaho Exchange. We are pleased to announce that Mr. Priest, one of our home boys, arrived here safely on Wednesday. fcyC The stork contributed to the happiness of the Gerald Streets during the week, leaving a little daughter. & & & Mrs. Kirkpatrick and the Misses Kirkpatrick leave for the coast next week, and will be in San Francisco until July, when they will take a cottage at Lake Tahoe. They will give a number of house parties at the lake during the summer, and quite r a number of the girls and men are going over from here. Judging from some who are said to be among the guests, it might be well to also invite a clergyman, clergy-man, and get a syndicate rate. t & & A delightful dinner of Sunday evening was that given by W. P. JSToble at the Alta Club. & ' & & It might be well for our enterprising citizen, Mr. Gus Holmes, to hire a pious manager who knows the business, if it is his intention to get a corner on all of the churches in town. Two in two weeks is going some. Mrs. C. C. Slade and daughter, Kathryn, have gone to New York for an extended visit. They will spend a part of" the time on the sea coast before returning. & & On Monday afternoon the Hope Engraving Company will keep open house and souvenirs will be given from 4 to 6 o'clock. It will be an opportunity op-portunity for the ladies who admire artistic stationery sta-tionery and engraving, to inspect the handso . 3t work ever seen in this city, and enjoy the bea tiful creations of the engraver's art. |
