Show THE SHOPS AND THEIR SHOWS. By Azelea McDuff. It must have cost a pretty sharp pang for the devout sex to give up tho morning service of praise and prayer in Mid-Lenten season, and to tear themselves away to the millinery openings the first part of the past week. But with the high sense of duty which should characterize all their acts they did It, and as is susually the case virtue had its own reward. Of all the gorgeous seasons In millinery this is the record breaker. Not only are the hats more stunning and the gowns more dazzling than over, but the variety is greater and the consequent bewilderment be-wilderment more bewildering. The big shops with their special openings brought out the crowds but every place of business where women's wear was to be had, reaped the benefit. And really it would be difficult to make a choice or to say that one display outrivaled another. What with the wealth of good things in materials, the endless variety of tailored suits, the fetching frocks for the summer wear, and the various articles ar-ticles that go to All the spring wants of women, the places of business presented sights worth seeing. At Walkers' the millinery department was the centre of attraction. Madame Morris with her corps of saleswomen made customers welcome. The great quantities of flowers and the costly array ar-ray of imported hats made the place a perfect bower of flowers and June freshness. A few hats must make an impression even on the casual observer, ob-server, though the only way a man can - see a hat is with a face benaeth it. There was one big blue hat with a round bowl shaped crown of radium ra-dium satin, with an edge of the same and a lacy interval between the two, that held around its crown a wreath of tiny rosebuds which might have been gathered for the affair. A large cabbage cab-bage rose with all its brilliant) foliage was fastened fast-ened at one side just above the face. Another hat of fine pink Milan was caught up at one sido with sprigs of wild roses,. a flower too seldom seen in summer millinery. A bower of green-leaves and early flowero set oil the hats at Keith-O'Brien's and here while the eye was on the hats gorgeous in their summer flowers and graces, the big demand was for tho opinions of Madame Jones, with her head full of the newest ideas in frocks and furbelows for the summer time, whose opinions were in demand by the hat buyers as well as the seekers for gowns. Miss Boehner at the head of the millinery department de-partment has a marvelous stock of hats, and the way they disappeared from view the first day spoke of their popularity. I noticed a jaunty hat of deep redish purple which will adorn, or will it be adorned by, the head of a belle among the younger matrons. The Paris Millnery had put into its festive air a wealth of gay wiegelia, a maze of the pretty vines decorating the entire space enclosed for the hats. Mrs. Abbie Rumel Smith, who has made a great deal of the popularity of tho department in past years is with the- firm again and has brought with her a quantity of millinery which would seem to be enough for all. The street hats seen here are the jauntiest imaginable while the number of picture hats and hats for special costumes would fill many books in detail. As usual tho Smart Shop of Hamilton's has lived up to its name this year, and while no special spe-cial opening was on, it was open all the time and drew alike for its hats and suite. The chic affairs so much affected for street wear just now, combining com-bining a touch of dressiness with the strictly tailored style are especially in evidence here, while the imported creations brought directly across the pond rival any to be seen this side of New York. Nor are the hats the only attraction, for along with the street suits for early Bpring wear are the frilliest of linen and Cecelian gowns for the summer time. A great jar of lilacs of every shade known In that flower is in Bank's window, and flanking it on every side and rising high all around it are hats of every style. The outside is only a faint suggestion of the glories within, for the hats hero are such an attraction that the long shop with its rows of tables has been filled since the week end opening. No hats were shown at Cohn's opening, but the display of spring suits was a fine one. The great show windows were filled all the early part of the week with the nattiest of white jacket suits, the kind that-makes one want the summer. Parasols in the same cool tone -added to the effect and made 'f ow display that was attractive. While no for opening was on, all the departments depart-ments show . their new stock and drew of the buyers in great numbers. Another fine window display was at the Z. C. M. I. where the space has been advantageously used for a showing that Is in good taste and style. The) hats here are the best the place has ever , shown. The great glass cases at the sides are filled with the importations and the novel Gage hats for street wear are in many varieties and stunning styles. The opening at Auerbach's extends from the from door on through to the millinery department, which, but for the fact that it serves to show off every department in the "big store, deserves a front place. For style and price the hats are unrivaled. un-rivaled. Indeed, it may safely be said that never before has Salt Lake had so much reason to be proud of her shops and her business people, for few cities of her size can boast as goodly an array of finery as is displayed in these days in he local shops. |
