Show It begins to look as though the tedious case of the distinguished apostolic Provoite, Senator. Smoot, would soon be disposed of. The people of this state know he is as much out of place there as he would be as professor of letters in a moderr. university, but whatever the verdict may be, tb ultimatum of the senate will be greeted generally with relief, particularly in the state where he naa inflicted the most irreparable damage. "Whether he goes or stays there will be a polit- ical readjustment here. If he is hurtled down, the senate stops, his local political machine will be expunged, or will at least take on a new titular divinity. If he remains, the RepuDllcan party ot this county at least will be about ready to dls. band. Republican politicians realize that they cannot win in this vicinity under his leadership. It would be more than senseless to believe that they could do do after they had themselves emphatically em-phatically repudiated him in the city last fall. Tho prospect doesn't look very roseate for the Republicans whichever way it goes. And if a v . secret ballot could be taken among the Mormon officials of this county, it would be found that they are practically unanimous in desiring his retirement, retire-ment, as they realize that with the Provoite as leader where gentiles predominate, as in this county, the Republicans are hopelessly beaten before the barrier goes up. |
