Show the First Nighters I I BERNHARDT. Sylvie Desnoyers has a line in "L'Hirondelle" which runs, "II y un pou de tout dans les larmes d'une femme," and there is a little of everything jfjpjj1 in a woman's tears when they are Bernhardt's "Mk tears. , Bernhardt's "Camille" was all Bernhardt as we llj saw it, for anything or anybody else appertaining ORPHEUM STOCK. In "The Girl I Left Behind Me" at the Or-pheum Or-pheum this week first nighters saw the best stock company that has been here since the palmy days of stock people at the Grand when we had Inger-soll, Inger-soll, and Edwards, and Blanche Bates, and Rebecca Rebec-ca Warren and all the rest of the galaxy. 1 ; Herschel Mayall, Leading Man, Orpheum Stock Company With scarcely three days in which to prepare, the new company made good with some trivial exceptions, ex-ceptions, in a way that would seem to assure a successful season, and though all have not been tried in a real test of ability the promise is for the best. Herschel Mayhall is a splendid leading man, and is fortunate in being able to be a popular idol and still be manly. That combination behind the footlights, is unusual in stock companies. P. G. MacLeari also made a fine impression. His villain was striking though a bit of lubricant in the left arm might have eased some of his scenes. R. J. Barrett's lines and feet were a trille mixed and his Hawkshaw in the last act was a scream, but he'll do better. i Mr. Robertson was the worst of the men, but he may be seen to good advantage in something else. Luke Cosgrove was a real Indian even if he did say "humin bein's." Julia Stuart had little to do in a part hardly suited to her, but did that little well. Ethel Stur-gis Stur-gis made a hit as Lucy Hawkesworth, and Miss Florence and Miss Conway were pleasing. It looks like a real stock company In town again, and "The Charity Ball" announced for next week will be awaited with no little interest. "The California Girls" and a few of their friends got into the Lyric for the final week of burlesque at that house. The girls themselves, with the clever assistance assist-ance of Miss Gladys Carlisle, pleased some good audiences in a show which, with the exception of the ladies, was very trvingT The men were coarse, their jokes fairly reeko.l, and if anything the show was worse than when it appeared here the first of the season. & & 5 It is said that John Cort has lost ?100,00 in his burlesque venture in a circuit of ten houses during dur-ing this season. And among all of those theaters from San Francisco to St. Paul the Lyric here is the only one that has made money. This amounts to another an-other good word for Salt Lake as a show town, I tohe perfor vhich is now oneof the ra- .. age would be about 0 if he ever tried to make a 1 1 "'' i 1: -i "it as a real actor. A Part of the Casino Before Completion, Manager Grant Resting Stage at the Casino and a few compliments for Mr. Grant and Mr. Guiney, in charge of the house. However, there will be no more burlesque at the Lyric, but a ten, twenty, thirty stock company com-pany will hold the boards next season. tC Casino Park, remodelled, and in the words of Barnum, "bigger and better than ever," started off with a whirl on Wednesday night. Zinn's Comedians are the real thing, and "Teezy-Wheezy" was as breezy a bit of music and fun as over displayed any signs of life at the pop-. . ular resort. The Casino has all the marks of permanent per-manent prosperity already, and the increasing crowds are somewhat of a testimonial to the worth of the lively company. |
