Show JUST A SQUARE DEAL. A sheet, the name of which is a groteque misnomer, seems much concerned because last year this journal supported the Republican ticket and this year advises all Gentiles to vote only for Gentiles. Let it rest its perturbed soul in peace. Last year was a presidential election year. The vc of Utah might have decided the question ques-tion between Theodore Roosevelt and Judge Parker between competency and incompetency, between an illustrious, heroic name and a whiner and skulker. Last year was a state election year, and there was a question between parties here, whether Republican Re-publican or Democratic policies were to. prevail for the next four years in Utah. Last year the Mormon people had not in conference, by thousands, thou-sands, representing their whole people enT thusiastically endorsed polygamy and eclesiastical rule, and the expelling from their church of any man who demanded justice from the high priests who control the spiritual and temporal affairs Hfl of the Mormon church. r, Wm Last year the president of the church had hot OH in a public magazine declared that commercialism was and always had been a part of the system, 'HI chat the government of the church was a perfect jH equipment really a distinct government in it- Last year a great corporation had not sought gflH to openly rob this city, and it had not 'been Hfl shown that the influence of a church was great jjH enough to accomplish that graft through council- H men who were elected as Republicans and Demo- , HI crats, but who, when put to the test, made clear 'HH that their oath of office was not binding enough to cause them to put aside instructions from church headquarters. .H Last year there was a personal element which is this year eliminated. From the day this journal ! 9H was founded, it has steadily fought what is illegal ! JH and un-American in the Mormon church. From Sgl the first it has besought the Mormon people to mm assert their manhood and be Americans. (Hi The events of the past year have proven that thy are not strong enough to fight back the 19 superstitious fear that holds their souls in leash. 'H This journal has not changed in any respect I S3 this year except to advise all Gentiles to vote for IB only Gentiles, and to keep that up until the Mor- H mon leaders, who really are the Mormon church, JB get out of politics. We think this is the duty of HH all Americans; we think it a duty to the state fflH and nation. Moreover, we think it is a duty to the , Wa Mormon people until they have the strength to j 881 appreciate the fact that their system, whenever Bfl j j ill tried, has always led to the degradation and en- j ' M slavement, and often to the destruction of any ',; ; people who have ever accepted it. Now, as in . ' jjlj all times past, this journal has only demanded ar j. H square deal. A |
