Show LOOKING TOO FAR AHEAD i By Cara Reese. Still it is not always to your credit to be longsighted. long-sighted. The "short view" individual has a less" troublesome life. Long views ahead take in the vista of probable disasters as well as the pleasant and agreeable happenings. Indeed, too much indulgence in the long view habit and the disasters and unpleasant probabilities probabili-ties are generally aggravat ' Hen the mind dwells too far in the rainy C" ierspective the present probabilities are gcnoi..iiy aggravated. "When the mind dwells too far in the rainy day perspective the present thought centers too strenuously stren-uously on raincoats and umbrellas and is dreary in consequence. The long view ever embraces the end of the string, the windup and the somber cortege. The short view never gets beyond, the county fair, the coming pay day and health, happiness hap-piness and good cheer, come Sunday or holiday. i . Short views, like short lengths, are frequently the most inspiring and leave a better taste in the mouth. Long views that incline to the darker side of the highway are to be discouraged. The worry lest some calamity befall before the children are grown, the anxiety lest the coming marriage of son or daughter prove a mismating, the fear lest the investments turn out wrong, or whether the old ago period will find a preparation, or whether this step or that step is a right or wrong move are familiar instances of the long view that is in a measure senseless. Take short views of life and you will get along better. Sydney Smith says, "Distant troubles may never come at all." The long view invariably borrows trouble. The long view appropriates endless worry which belong properly to other people. The story of the young girl who sat weeping beneath the rafters raft-ers because of a long view that pictured disaster in that the overhead rashers of bacon might someday some-day in the long distance fall upon and crush the cranium of her possible offspring has its counterpart counter-part in the senseless anxieties of really intelligent intelli-gent people. Learn to take shorter views. I, Learn to take shorter views when calamity has deprived a young household of its head and the grave situation arises of how the dependent ones are to faro under totally different conditions. Take shorter views when delinquency and mis' conduct of those in your charge are a temptation to plunge you into sleeplessness and despair; live by the days and be thankful for the good in the short space or view. Take shorter views when prone to be troubled over the ways and the means for accomplishing certain purposes; the manna falls and the way opens as the advance is made. Take short views, those of you with straining eyes and souls endeavoring to see through the Dlvino will and purposes. Ah, yes, take short views when darkness has closed in about you, when you are hemmed in, I ndered and thwarted; when the cliffs rise impassably im-passably on ono hand and the gorge roars on the other and the plank is narrow ahead. Take short views when you are brought to a standstill stand-still and dare not move in your tracks. But take the view just the same. Never lose courage nor sink in the slough. There are times for a keen, long view, but the short view is the wiser plan, there is less danger of going blind. |
