Show Beautiful Portugal A WRITER in the Geographic Magazine pictures 1 little Portugal as the most beautiful of c lands. A land of fair fields, wonderful forests for-ests and most exquisite flowers. The people, he discrlbes as the smallest, but with the largest heads in Europe. In the past they have over and over shown their valor and their enterprise. Tney "' ' and "proved up"on their claim to Brazil. The' mriners first rounded the Cape of Good How. In the 16th century, they were justly held as a great race. They, too, are naturally industrious, industri-ous, only their field is so small, there is not work for so many hands, their taxes are fearfully high. They are in a position, where the eagle within them is chained to a rock, and generation after generation of them beat their wings helplessly against their poverty and the limitations that bind them around. They have driven away their king, they are building school houses, but what can they do when so circumscribed, where there is no field for them to expand In? Our thought is that they should appeal to their cousins in Brazil for room for their surplus people, and as the older sons reach manhood, encourage them to marry the girls of their hearts and found a new colony in a new world. We are sure that Republican Brazil would gladly welcome their cousins of Republican Portugal, and so soon as the first emigrants could establish homes and find that there was ample land for them to work, the exodus would swell in numbers all the time, until at home and abroad there would be homes and a new hope for all, and the old glory might come back to the race. |
