Show - AMERICAN FALLS. Many years ago "Pa-vi-kat" was tho InOian name, of what is today known as American Falls, Idaho. The Snake, or Lewis fork, of the Colum- 1 bia river at this place cuts through a ledge of j metamorphlc rock creating a fall of something ) less than one hundred feet. Above the falls and extending in an easterly direction a large area of irrigable land is found. Situated on the east bank of the river and the southwest corner of this arable section is the prosperous and growing grow-ing little village of American Falls, just now attaining at-taining its twenty-first annivprsary. Through the development bureau of the Oregon Short Line railway this place has become an outlet for a large section of agricultural land to the south, which includes the Rockland and Raft river districts dis-tricts as, also the Sunbeam and Bannock valleys. The town is supplied with electric lights, furnished fur-nished by the American Falls Light & Power company, of which J. H. Brady is manager. This company Is one of the largest and best equipped in the west and is at the present time furnishing light and power to a metropolis of the state (Po-catello) (Po-catello) and will shortly extend its service to Blackfoot and several other minor places. American Falls is the hoadquarters of the Tarpey Brothers' big pumping plant This con-- con-- cern is finishing a twelve-foot tunnel nearly two hundred feet in length, through which they will nearly treble the supply of water to their valuable valua-ble placer mining claims. The Tupper-Bridge Water Power company have expended a great amount of money on their big fore bay and ditch 11 and are now awaiting a land decision to complete com-plete the undertaking. This company will be able to furnish water for irrigating six thousand acres of land. At the meeting of the last legislature legisla-ture the sum of ten thousand dollars was appropriated ap-propriated for the building of a wagon and foot bridge over the Snake river at this place; the state engineering department have already made the required soundings and measurements and the commissioners have advertised for bids, thus admitting of the belief that the structure will be completed by January next This will not only bring to this place the trade of the west and north, but will make American Falls a large shipping ship-ping point for the cattle, sheep and wool growers. The town has an active board of trade, the secretary of which Mr. W. Taylor will take great pleasure in answering all inquiries. |
