Show Doin's Politically. Jonah Jarvis is still in Salt Lake. He continues to write letters to his mother. Here is his last one: Dear Mother: In my last I told you about a primary I had attended. at-tended. But a primary is nothing to a convention in Utah. The Republican county convention met in the famous Salt Lake Theater, and as it was open to all, I strolled in and watched and listened. Mother, it was great. Out of the last Senatorial election, it seems a close alliance has grown up between the machine run by the junior Senator from Utah and the Mormon church. Through his influence the Senator had appointed a United States Marshal and United States District Attorney Attor-ney from Utah and a Chaplain for the Army. All these were active engineers or stokers for the machine ma-chine in the convention. You know, everything even' dancing parties open with prayer in Utah. Well, this newly-fledged Chaplain did the praying for the convention. Before it was over some one said that he was spelling the "praying" with an "e." Anyway he was handy, no matter what direction direc-tion the exercises took. The usual preliminaries being completed with the combine fully in control, the nominations were in order. Mother, some of those nominating speeches would have warmed your heart. Some brilliant men, by brilliant speakers, were placed In nomination. nomi-nation. When the men the Chaplain wanted nominated nom-inated were named, he forgot that he was a minister min-ister of the Gospel and a Chaplain In the Army of the United States, and, springing to his feet, moved that the nominations be declared closed. When the ballots were counted It was shown that the combine candidates were like Abou Ben Adam they "led all the rest." But the heroes and scholars were to a man turned down, and some of those nominated really do not seem either by birth, training or mental equipment to quite fill the public estimate of the kind of men that . should be named for such offices. But the President Presi-dent of this Stake, several Bishops and no end of Elders were on the floor "rustling" for the men nominated. The machine was perfectly oiled and ran through the convention without one creak. Finally one man got more votes than any other named for one especial office, whereupon the United States District Attorney moved that this particular man be nominated by acclamation. Then another appointee of Senator Kearns, who, by tne way, is the son of an Apostle, gave the ,t, . g9 whole snap away by shouting "all right, let 'em fi 1 IfpH have one candidate," which showed how perfectly ' ' f ijfl the slate was made up and. how the programme ?! HiB wa3 carried out. Tammany generally has a boss v' XvmB who moves the rank and file of the tribe with pre- 1 l' jfl cislon, but Tammany is but a kindergarten com- j-t '"IB pared with the school of politics in Utah. The $ ! I JB Church here is the dominant power and, h " ''ilfl when necessary, the word goes out that it is God's Ci f ffl will that the brethren vote a certain way; that is k'wB equivalent to moving the previous question. It j 11 IB shuts off debate. Attached to this is a spoils com l t f '' BB tingent of Gentiles, with acquisitiveness largely ' Ml 4 SB developed in their heads, and the engineer of these : J' !! is the junior Senator. It is a combine that is hard I H J V IB to throw down. The outlook dally takes on a jkJflB more distinct appearance; that It Is burlesque to ' hiMflH call Utah an American State. It is simply in the U j f JH hands of a power that claims a double realm, a I e UlB celestial kingdom and a kingdom on earth, a dou- L , 1,1 JJB ble government, a religious and temporal govern- R'l - t 'fMB ment that is all embracing and which Is not nearly fc IJifflB so much American in its nature as it is Mohamme- L,' ffjB dan. The praise of the flag is a hollow mockery. K f fjH The babble of the Constitution is, with their in- Ss-'IIH terpretation, but another way of saying they are Si CJfflB determined to do as they please in a tone which 1 Ji OBI further implies "what are you going to do about it 3t 8H it?" I!k,,'.B1 9 EnB The Republican convention oyer, last Monday t j .fc ifH the Democrats held their convention and' I attend- & 1 1 'ijB ed that. " aV-lB In this region when a mine is paying largely Bl, w?flB It Is said to be in bonanza. Bonanza is a Mexican gjl J 1 4188 word which in English means "a fair wind," but Mi HjjpMB It has been corrupted Into fair sailing and applied fg i'fB to mines when yielding generously. When a mine 1 fPf runs out of ore it is said to be in boraska, that U JbI meaning a contrary blast. Well, the Democracy M ? f SH in Utah is in boraska this year, and, so to speak, 3 ""'jj 'WM are liable never again to show pay ore until a v, Wfl Democratic President shall be elected. Hence I !' IB when their convention met there was no slate. j' ,LiiB The struggle was not to secure the nominations of jttj Sj JB certain men, but to find men who would accept 'I i; fjfl the nominations. M V vjB The result was that some very splendid men t. -2 Hfl were named, gentlemen of education and high f, , jjinB character, gentlemen who could not be induced to ' jci B perform a dishonorable act or cast an unworthy &H&J Ikifl vote for all the gold In Utah's hills. -wB Still I believe that every one of these will be 1- jff$B turned down on election day, for the combine has Vfii m f.'SB its machine oiled and in perfect condition, and on m JB election day It threatens to be a perfect jugger- 1 y 1 jilB naut. Dear mother, there are some beautiful girls 1 1 J WM here, but it is a tough atmosphere in which to ff I j HB bring up a family. Can you not help me to get at I ! vf B least part of the way home? Affectionately yoursr K TIj&B JONAH JARVIS. 1 - $uH 8 " . .uinilH |
